The Ripples of Consequence
The Ripples of Consequence is a composition for the Table of Babel, commissioned by Productions Totem Contemporain, and performed by Audréanne Filion, with a light design by Nat Descoteaux.
Each of our actions and decisions has infinite repercussions. Together with those of the rest of the world, they resonate, interfere, and collide in an inextricable network of causalities, like waves on the surface of existence.
This idea formed the basis for the writing of the piece, which began with an encounter with the Table of Babel. After spending a few hours playing with it, I realized that it was futile to try to control it. It seemed better to consider it as a partner with whom to engage in dialogue.
One of its characteristic traits is the great importance one has to give to the preparation of her instruments, which then influences all the musical colors of the sounds it produces.
To explore this singularity as much as possible, I decided to focus on this initial roll of the dice that is the preparation. Using a digital audio device to amplify and diffract the consequences of this decision, the music emerges in dialogue with the performer.
The premiere of the piece was presented with le Vivier on February 23, 2025 at Édifice Wilder, Montreal, Canada.
Recordings
Three versions of the piece are presented here, each of them showing a different embodiment of this composition, depending on the preparation of the instrument, the inspiration of the (same) performer and other parameters.
